After having worked toward a goal of establishing a healthy community for ourselves and our friends for the better part of 5 years, David and I set a goal of purchasing a piece of land by October 2013. Better late than never, after a steep learning curve, the first of many goals is accomplished!
As of January 17th 2014, we are the proud owners of an ex-nursery site in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. After visiting what our realtor called ‘every piece of dirt in the County’, we jumped on this interesting location. It was purchased as land, but there are many existing ‘improvements’.
Three quarters wooded, and one quarter cleared on the top of the hill. There is a sweet 3 bay garage, 6 assorted sheds, a single wide trailer, and a well and septic. Woo! We think we saved ourselves about 5 years of work!
With all the benefits, we did inherit some extra work. The cleared area is mostly covered in Gravel. Particularly the site we have chosen for our future garden. There is an area we affectionately refer to as ‘the dump’, the old mulch yard (in some place 2 feet deep), and various nursery nonsense to be cleaned up everywhere.
This is what we bargained for! A lifetime of labor and projects to look forward to.
